The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and Twilight Princess Nintendo Switch ports are still set for release this year, according to reports.

Video Games Chronicle journalist Andy Robinson took to Twitter after last night’s Nintendo Direct to claim that both titles would still arrive in 2021. Robinson stated that the two games were “100% coming this year”, and such confidence suggests that he may be right. However, Robinson did not elaborate on whether Wind Waker and Twilight Princess would be repackaged Wii U ports or if they would receive their own Switch upgrades.

Robinson’s tweet appears to line up with rumors that circulated online ahead of the Direct showing. Twitter user LeakyPandy suggested that Nintendo would be making “significant announcements in the next four weeks”, which hints at more reveals to come. It is possible, then, that Wind Waker and Twilight Princess ports may form part of those upcoming reveals.

Following the first major Direct presentation since September 2019, some Nintendo fans expressed their disappointment that more Zelda announcements weren’t forthcoming. The beloved franchise celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, and fans had been hoping to hear more news to commemorate the occasion.

Wind Waker Switch Release Date

In other Zelda-related news, Nintendo confirmed that a HD remaster of Skyward Sword would arrive on their Switch hybrid console this summer. Special Zelda-themed Joy-Cons, which represent the Master Sword and Hylian Shield, will also be getting released in July to celebrate the series’ 35th birthday. During the Direct, Nintendo also revealed that work was continuing on Breath of the Wild 2, and that they would have more news for eager fans later this year.

2021 marks the 35th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda franchise, and many are expecting Nintendo to go all-out for the series like it did with Super Mario last year. So far, Nintendo has kept most of its cards close to its chest, but the most recent Nintendo Direct presentation did shed light on at least some of Nintendo's plans when it comes to The Legend of Zelda franchise. As revealed at the Nintendo Direct, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is getting new content through an Expansion Pass, plus The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is coming to the Switch this summer.

While some fans were excited to see The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD confirmed for Switch, others were hoping to see different Zelda ports announced for Nintendo's home console/handheld hybrid. Apparently, there are still plans for Nintendo to bring some other The Legend of Zelda games to the Nintendo Switch this year, as VGC's Andy Robinson has said that 'Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are 100% coming this year.'

It's unclear if Robinson is just guessing or if he is going off of information that he has. Regardless, it would make sense for Twilight Princess and Wind Waker ports to make their way to the Switch in 2021 as well. After all, HD versions of The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess already exist, having been developed for the Wii U. And Nintendo has shown a clear desire to port as many Wii U exclusive games to the Switch as possible, so Twilight Princess and Wind Waker on Switch already seem like an inevitability, even though they were nowhere to be seen at the latest Nintendo Direct.

For those disappointed with the Skyward Sword remaster, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are 100% coming this year. So that's at least one good 3D Zelda.

Wind Waker Switch Release

Nintendo had said going into the February 2021 Nintendo Direct that it would focus primarily on Nintendo Switch games launching in the first half of 2021. While it broke that promise on a few different occasions, it does make sense for it to highlight Skyward Sword HD first and then save the Wind Waker and Twilight Princess announcements for a later date, especially if they aren't coming until the second half of the year.

In the meantime, there may be even more Zelda franchise announcements for fans to look forward to this year. Nintendo has recently filed a new trademark for The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, leading to speculation that the classic Nintendo DS game will be getting a Switch port at some point this year as well. While that remains to be seen, it would be a great way for Nintendo to really celebrate The Legend of Zelda's 35th anniversary.

As far as the future of the Zelda franchise goes, Nintendo has said that fresh information on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 will be coming this year as well. Maybe the company will have more to share on that front when E3 season rolls around this summer.
